A lot of users who upgraded their internet explorer versions found their Favorites missing. The favorites are still there, the default setting is to hide them.
Your Favorites icon (golden star) got moved to the right. If you click it it will also open your Favorites side bar with all your bookmarks. Your Favorites Bar with shortcuts to your select favorite websites is hidden. To reveal go to View > Toolbars > select Favorites Bar.
