The best all around microphone and an old standby for vocals is a Shure SM58. (omnidirectional)

Recording acoustic instruments recording engineers prefer 'directional' mics, sometimes called 'cardioid' or 'Condenser' Means that they have preamps in them and are battery powered and they are VERY directional, usually long and slender. These mics will only pic up sounds directly in front of them.. Not good for vocals though.

It depends on the equipment quality and how 'perfect' you want to be.. Doing a professional recording calls for very expensive equipment and a studio that is soundproof. If you just want to make a simple recording, go to radio shack and buy a $19.95 microphone..

Understand this, the cheaper the microphone, the more it picks up around it.. They have no filtering or compression.. Some people think that if a microphone can pickup someone talking at the back of the room that this is a good mic, its not! Its garbage..
