Computer modeling allows mapping techniques not otherwise available to geographers. My professor is a soil scientists and the geology department now has an entire course on how to use the system. For a complete answer to your question, look at https://www.usgs.gov and check out their computer models and you will be able to see for yourself how cool they are!
