Many of the answers are somewhat common sense ones, for example: the products are easier to carry, just imagine carrying 20 loose custard creams, or or a bag of cornflakes without the box, additionally, it's in the word itself' 'packaging, in that it is not only aesthetic, it is a little more practicle to handle, also whether we realise it or not, packaging, if it is done right, is designed to give us an indication of the contents of the package itself, for example, garden products often come in green containers, cleaners tend to carry pastille colours like yellow, pink, white and such like, packaging is alo a good way of detailing the contents of the package, additionally and very importantly, it is often used to give the consumer some indication as to 'how much is in the package, as 500g is hard to visualise, and a 500g pack of apples, will be considerably larger than a 500g ingot for example as gold is more dense than water. Furthermore, it allows the consumer to more quickly 'recognise' a brand, as if 1 needs to buy 30 or 40 items this can almost be considered a time saving device, as most of us do not like to shop for any longer than we have to, also the colouring is often a good indicator as to the nature of the product, if you look at dog and cat foods for example many of the tins wrapping appear to come in colours that we associate with edibles, greens, yellows, browns and so on. Finally, and fundamentally, considering eco freindliness, much of the packaging today considers it's disposal, for example, if I broke down every box I used for 1 month, I am certain I could easily fit it into 1 box no larger than a box that would hold a portable tv, as that is much of why they are designed the way they are.
Whilst this is only a summary offering, i hope it gives you a small insight into the many reasons for much of the packaging that exists today. Ps I will hasten to add that when i shop now, I make a point of removing much of the packaging at the counter, as I cannot eat it, things like pizzas, burgers, are easy to put into a bag, because they are flat, and if they are frozen, on a cold day there is little risk they will deteriorate during a short journey.
