When renting a motorhome (RV) in the US, basic insurance is usually included in the rental price, but it almost always comes with a very high deductible, which is often equal to the size of your security deposit. To avoid paying thousands of dollars out of pocket for even the slightest damage, it is recommended to take out additional insurance packages.
Here are the main types of additional insurance that rental companies offer:
1. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or VIP Package
This is insurance for damage to the motorhome itself (analogous to CASCO).
Why you need it: The base rate covers repairs, but if you damage your car (collision, low bridge, interior damage), your card will be charged the full deductible ($500-$2,500+). CDW reduces this deductible to zero or a nominal amount ($100–$500).
Important: Standard travel insurance or your home credit card coverage most often does not cover RV rentals in the US.
2. Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI)
Third party liability insurance.
Why you need it: State minimum liability limits can be as low as $15,000 to $25,000. If you become the culprit of an accident and people or someone else’s expensive car get hurt, this money may not be enough. SLI increases your coverage up to $1,000,000.
Recommendation: Medicine and courts are very expensive in the USA; this type of insurance is critical to protecting your finances.
3. Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)
Medical insurance for the driver and passengers inside the motorhome.
Why you need it: Covers the cost of treatment for injuries sustained while in an RV (such as a stove burn or sudden braking injury). If you have good international health insurance (Travel Health Insurance), PAI may be redundant.
4. Roadside Assistance
Technical assistance 24/7.
Why you need it: Motorhomes are complex vehicles. If a tire goes flat (often there is no spare tire, only sealant), the battery of the household unit runs out, or the toilet breaks down, a regular tow truck will not help. The package includes a visit from a specialized team specifically for RVs: draining tanks, filling with water, changing tires and delivering fuel.
What to Avoid (Double Coverage)
Renters will aggressively offer a “Total Peace of Mind” package for $30–$50 per day, which includes all of the above.
Before purchasing, check your bank card (Visa Infinite, Mastercard World Elite) - some premium cards offer free CDW insurance, but only if you paid 100% of the rental with that card.
Check your annual health insurance policy - it will replace PAI.
Final advice: The optimal set is mandatory SLI (minimum $1 million liability) + either CDW or willingness to pay a deposit in the event of a minor accident. Without extended liability (SLI), traveling on American highways is extremely risky.
