Not all skeletonized watches are created equal. Some reduce the material to the point of allowing the link wearer to count his/her wrist hairs through the dial. Others maintain a denser, more closed aesthetic. The Zenith Defy Skyline Chronograph Skeleton follows the latter recipe. And that’s a good thing if you ask me. I think such skeleton watches tend to look better on the wrist.I could see how the chopped-off numerals might bother some, but I am not one of them. The implementation of the gyro, a device that keeps a plane automatically on course, changed that, along with the solar compass and aeronautical charts of the polar region developed during WWII. It's often said that SAS elected to work with Universal Genève due to their known prowess in developing anti-magnetic movement technology, and that the Polerouter watch was specifically developed to be impervious to the adverse effects of magnetism, though this is conjecture at best.
These days, the focus seems to be on whopping power reserves and in-house calibers, with even mid-tier brands jumping on the bandwagon. But if you know your vintage watches, you’ll be aware of a time when everything wasn’t measured in the number of bridges, cogs, and pinions a brand produced by itself. On the image below, you will see that the hour markers turned a bit green-ish and are a bit smudgy, but look good on the blue/grey surface.Obviously, the whole package link had to be upsized to accommodate the more complicated caliber L.903.0, but the case still comes in at a reasonable 41.2mm across and 14.3mm thick. That movement has well over 1,000 components including those required for the chain and it once again makes use of those diamond endstones (though you have to hunt a little harder to see the one on the back.RA: For the 'iykyk' collection, it was a special process since the idea was there already, mainly because I'm compulsively looking at watches and constantly trying to find a way to twist them. But most of the time, the approach is to gather all the information about the said watch and try to find a breach to instill some sort of a "contrarian" and/or "ironic" flair.
With this reissue of the 1971 A3817 as a 1,000-piece limited series, Zenith invites once again to discover or rediscover a model which forged the legend of link the El Primero caliber. But the De Ville came with a nice quirky dial that we'll get to in a minute. All told, there are a ton of watches for sale this weekend. To be exact: 1,161 in live auctions. This Bring A Loupe is a bit long so grab a cup of coffee or, more generally, your beverage of choice, and settle in. Remember throughout that because of the sheer number of watches I had to pick from, this edition may not look like the others, but hang with me.
