How Do I Prevent Injector Cup Failure?

Prevention is mostly about maintenance and avoiding thermal shock.

    • Change Coolant Regularly: The seal between the cup and the head relies on the integrity of the metal and the sealant. Old, acidic coolant can corrode the outside of the cup, causing pinhole leaks.

    • Don't Over-Tighten Injectors: The injector hold-down clamps apply pressure to the injector, which seats it into the cup. Over-torquing these clamps can distort the injector body or even crack the top lip of the injector cup.

    • Avoid Sudden Temperature Changes: Pouring cold water into a radiator on an overheated engine creates massive thermal shock. The cylinder head and the injector cups (which are different metals) expand and contract at different rates, which can break the seal or crack the cup.

    • Use Quality Coolant: Always use the correct type of coolant for your Cummins (often low-silicate or Heavy-Duty Diesel spec) to prevent cavitation and corrosion around the cups.
