A rule of thumb that puts you in the ball park: To convert miles to kilometers divide by 5 and multiply by 8 eg 80 miles divided by 5 = 16 multiply by 8 = 128 kilometers...... To convert kilometers to miles you divide by 8 and multiply by 5 eg 128 kilometers divided by 8 = 16 multiply by 5 =80 miles. A kilometer is roughly 5/8ths of a mile. This of course disproves the above answer that TSC heard on T.V. because 80 divided by 8 =10 multiply by 5=50 not 44. When we Aussies, for what ever reason changed from miles to kilometers we oldies had a lot of learning to do. As an aside I was amazed to find England measured distances in miles and bought petrol in litres DUH! We are klms and litres, currently $A1.50 per litre.

We're paying an average of £1.36p a litre in the UK and it's a bloody rip off.

PETOL PRICE WILL DROP BECAUSE OF BIN LADEN DEMISE -- IF YOU CAN BELIEVE THAT. THE REASON WE WENT TO METRIC IN '66 WAS TO RIP US OFF.
the correct answer is 111.8 miles and Snaghowzwer is 49.7 miles away ----k's to miles multiply by 5 and then divide by 8

I'll have to write a nasty letter to that Rick Steve's dude. ;)

Bulletman is my calculator having a dummy spit?180x5=900divided by 8 =112.5. Using my method 180kms divided by 8=22.5 multiply by 5 =112.5miles. I am not saying your system is flawed but your 111.8 is.

YOU ARE RIGHT 'I JUST HAD A GUESS ' I DON'T USE A CALCULATOR --- THE ROAD WAS MADE A LITTLE LONGER SINCE THA QUESTION WAS ASKED -- TRUE BLUE

Could only be a bullshitter Aussie that would come up with that excuse. Why don`t you tell the truth your calculator was Made in China so it doesn`t work south of the equator. SHIT! so was mine, bugger!
I was watching a Rick Steve's Europe episode last night and he said the way to measure Kilometers is to take the number posted, say 80, and divide it in half (40) then add 10% 44.

So, if the town of Snaghowzer is 80K away its really 44 miles away.
    johnboy

    No it's not..80k is 49.7 miles approx..Kilometres to miles is approx 5/8th's
    TSC

Shoot, the last time I was in Europe was in 1976 and I NEVER DROVE so what the h*ll do I know? :(
