There has been some success with hay bales secured together( I am not joking) then covered with clay mud or cement. You end up with incredible insulation and sound proofing. Only problem is it takes you ages to walk out the doorway of a room with two foot thick walls.. But honestly I have seen examples of this technique on Australian Television. The end result looks quite attractive, dont know what would happen in a drought if the cattle got really hungry.
