Catholic tradition holds that the Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ. The New Testament records Jesus' activities and teaching, his appointment of the twelve Apostles and his instructions to them to continue his work.

Jesus didn't found any church. It is catholic belief that claims so. But there were several other early christian groups around before the establishment of the catholic church, whose doctrine began to become more clearly defined from the 2nd century onward, mostly to differentiate it from other currents of belief, like gnosticism.
