I don't usually love two-tone. This may or may not have something to do with the branded Rolex phrase, "Rolesor," (which is their own special made-up word for the combination of steel and white, yellow, or rose gold). I know we have the world's biggest champion of bi-metal Rolex watches in Danny Milton, but it wasn't until I was able to experience an early 70's steel-and-gold GMT "Root Beer" in person that I started to change my opinion on whether or not these watches were "for me."The controls are all set into the right case flank with an upper pusher that advances the date, a central crown for time setting and hand winding, and a lower crown that controls the 12-hour bezel. All of these touchpoints are meant to feel as tactile link and camera-like as possible. And you know what? They really do.The watch retailed at €860, the same price as a "normal" Tangente in 2006. Today, they are super rare and hard to find, and many people watch out for this. Realistically, its value should be at least twice the retail, if it comes with a full set.Another explanation: There's a natural cross-pollination between hobbies wherein man and machine chase elusive perfection together. The "Watch Dork" and "Car Nerd" are simply walking different paths up the same mountain. At times, those paths converge. There must be some deep communal well within us enthusiasts, I thought, the life source from which every last obsession is drawn, whether old leaky BMWs, carbon racing bicycles, hand-wound chronographs, or vintage lever espresso machines.
The owner took a host of sweet photos of his 2011-ish Ploprof that seemingly comes with all the kit (the watch and photos are the property of the seller). The Hamilton Khaki Field Day Date Auto that I have here is, of course, a bit bigger than those watches, that had a diameter of approx. These deep, link colorful lacquer dials have everyone going bonkers. They represent the kind of Rolex playfulness akin to orange lightning bolt Milgauss seconds hands. Rolex is not a name synonymous with words like loose or fun – or at least, it didn't used to be. But you wouldn't know that just by looking at these dials.James and Cole join me in the virtual studio to dig into this wide array of sport watches (and one or two other things, for good measure). We weigh in on the ideal size for an IWC Pilot's Watch, talk about Montblanc's savvy collection updates, and discuss the finer points of Panerai's experiments with unusual materials. There are a few hotter-than-usual takes and, as always, these guys provide some excellent perspective that you won't want to miss.
The Speedmaster link Professional Speedy Tuesday limited edition is delivered in a special leather watch roll that contains the watch, the spare strap and strap-changing tool. The first was the full-steel champagne-dial model that I own, and the second was a two-tone option with a gold dial. But there was also the white-dial version with Roman numerals, which is a bit of an acquired taste. Both pieces speak to the characters that wear them. Willard is more of the prototypical young soldier of the era, the kind of man out in the thick of it all. It makes sense that he wears what was one of the more popular watch choices of the day. Kurtz on the other hand is a sort of larger-than-life character, seated like a king in a fortress of his own creation. What better watch for a wackadoo king than one with an off-kilter crown?
