Your Detailed Itinerary
DAY 01: CUSCO – PAUCARTAMBO – PRE INCAS TOMBS – BAMBOO LODGE We will pick you up from your accommodation in Cusco between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. for an 8-hour drive. We’ll stop at the quaint colonial town of Paucartambo and then visit the ancient Pre-Inca Tombs at Ninamarca. We'll officially enter Manu National Park at Acjanaco (4000 masl) and begin our descent into the cloud forest. Your guide will point out hundreds of unique plant species like orchids and bromeliads, as well as wildlife such as woolly monkeys, spectacled bears, and the national bird of Peru, the Cock-of-the-Rock. We will arrive at the Bamboo Lodge for dinner and our first night. Private rooms, private toilets, and electricity are available.
DAY 02: BAMBOO LODGE – ATALAYA PORT – MACHUWASI LAKE – DORADO LODGE After an early breakfast, we continue by van to the Port of Atalaya (500 masl). We'll make an optional stop at an animal rescue station before embarking on a 40-minute motorized boat trip. We'll walk for about 45 minutes inside the jungle to Machuwasi Lake, where we will explore on rustic catamarans. We have a chance to see capybaras, alligators, and different bird species, including the prehistoric-looking Hoatzin. Our journey continues for about 1.5 hours to the natural thermal baths of Aguas Calientes for lunch, then another 2 hours to Dorado Lodge. After dinner, we will do a night walk to see nocturnal animals and have the opportunity to visit a mammal clay lick to look for tapirs, wild pigs, and deer.
DAY 03: DORADO ECOLODGE – OTORONGO LAKE – CASA MATSIGUENKA LODGE We wake up early to travel by boat to the Limonal Checkpoint, the entrance to the Manu Reserved Zone. This is where your chances of spotting a hidden jaguar on the riverbanks are highest, especially in the dry season. We can also see large caimans, spider monkeys, and sloths. After 4-5 hours, we will reach Otorongo Lake and climb a 20-meter tower for a spectacular view. Here, we can spot giant river otters. We then travel another 45 minutes to Casa Matsiguenka Lodge, where we will spend two nights. After dinner, we'll do a night hike to observe frogs, snakes, and insects.
DAY 04: CASA MATSIGUENKA LODGE – SALVADOR LAKE – MACAWS AND PARROTS CLAY LICK Today we visit one of the main attractions of this incredible journey, Salvador Lake. We will explore it by catamaran in the early morning to find giant river otters. After returning to the lodge for lunch, we will walk for about 30 minutes to a Macaws Clay Lick to witness a "symphony" of blue-and-yellow and scarlet macaws. In the afternoon, we will learn about the Matsiguenka tribe's customs, crafts, and survival techniques. We'll end the day with a walk to look for monkeys.
DAY 05: CASA MATSIGUENKA LODGE – PAPAYA LODGE We leave Casa Matsiguenka Lodge early for another chance to spot a jaguar on the river. We will travel downriver for about 4 hours to the Limonal Checkpoint and then continue for another 4 hours to Papaya Lodge. That night, you can either do a night walk or take a 45-minute walk to our shelter house, where you can observe large mammals like tapirs and wild boars at a mammal clay lick.
DAY 06: PAPAYA LODGE – ATALAYA PORT – CUSCO After breakfast, we take our final boat ride back to Atalaya Port, where our private transport will be waiting to take us back to Cusco. We will have a box lunch on the way and arrive around 6:00 p.m. Your guide will drop you off at your hotel.
