Today, the watch industry is set up almost entirely differently link to that of the fashion link industry. A very wise man (aka Michael Friedman) once told me that it all comes down to a dichotomy of permanence and obsolescence. We see high-end watches as a token of forever and fashion as a fleeting fad, but both are fundamentally expressions of culture. And despite their differences, the two really aren't that dissimilar link when you frame them both as expressions of personal style.

The second question I always ask is more deliberately objective. I think a lot of folks think "do I like it" is the most important question when you're evaluating a watch. For potential consumers in general it is. link For serious watch enthusiasts though and for watch writers I think a much better question is "what kind of watch does link this want to be and how well link does it succeed at that goal"
