Ten years ago Wempe launched its very own chronometer watches under the Zeitmeister banner. It is a major milestone for the company, mostly associated with its luxury watch boutiques scattered throughout the world. To celebrate the anniversary, Wempe is adding five new timekeepers to its line-up, including a limited edition diver's chronograph and, wait for it, a pendulum clock.Lot 40 is a “McQueen Monaco” (Reference 1133B), the exact version worn by Steve McQueen in the movie, Le Mans.  Whereas the first blue Monacos had a metallic finish, starting in 1970s, the standard production models had midnight blue paint, with a matt finish.  Red accents are used on the main time-of-day hands, as well as for the chronograph second hand, consistent with the markers on the dial.When Nicholas was a kid, his uncle had a Ferrari, and this Girard-Perregaux F300 Ferrari Chronograph – both of which Nicholas thought were pretty cool. He's telling us the story of his school watch.The Horological Society of New York (HSNY) has an extensive collection of ephemera in its library, and during my internship, I was able to dig up a number of Swatch catalogs from the late 1990s and early 2000s that showcase Swatch's attempt to reinvent time (see image 1).
The white Roman numerals and softly-curved hour and minute hands provide a nice pop, and lighten up the dial of the watch. The same goes for the date disc at six o’clock, which is both discreet and very legible when it needs to be. Does it need to be there at all? I’m not sure. It’s certainly there to be functional, though I suspect the dial might be more beautiful without the intrusion. It goes without saying that a dive watch is a particularly good fit for vacation and summertime – and this watch is no exception.
