I am Sicilian, when i was a kid, my grandmother always referred to cars as 'questa macchina' Meaning 'this car..' Or che macchina' 'that car..'
Of course the word actually means 'machine' which identifies any mechanical device that has moving parts.
She was an old timer though, that 'slang' was probably used as our old timers called them 'horseless carriage'
