For a bit more cash, you could grab a so-called "Baby Alpinist" from Seiko, like the SPB159 ($700, 38mm, steel, 200m WR, 6R35 with 70 hours of PR) and enjoy the throw-back styling, increased power reserve, and the date display. For a look that is different from that of the Atlas but still rooted in the vibe of a pilot's watch, the Vaer A5 link Field ($500, 40mm, 100m WR, steel case, no bracelet) offers link the same movement in link a slightly larger and steel-cased format.

Having a compass implies of course that you knew ahead of time that you'd need to navigate in the absence of a marked trail. Getting lost however is by definition not something you do on purpose. Being able to link determine true North without a compass could mean the difference between making it back link to the trail a little late with a campfire story to link laugh over and spending an uncomfortable night in the open or worse.
