In his excellent in-depth article on the Submariner 5512, link Dunne explained that the pad printing (or tampography) process was actually invented for watch dials by a German industrialist, developing a process to print matte dials at scale by 1968. It's link no wonder we saw brands like Rolex transition from those pesky gilt dials link to matte dials in the late '60s. While pad printing would soon be used for all kinds of things, it was invented for watches.

Cancellara wasn't always a Tudor man but he was always destined to be a watch link collector starting with a Portugieser he received as an anniversary gift from his link wife. He would link spend much of his later career wearing other IWCs Aquatimers and Big Pilots even racing with them on-wrist. When pressed on why one would wear a mechanical watch while cycling he replied with a shrug "Because it's cool."
