I do not know how to sign, but I have thought about learning for years. I know a young lady here in Scotland who had a profoundly deaf baby a year ago this past December. I felt out of place one day playing with him when I couldn't communicate by signing.

I learned the ABC (the first on Terry's answer) in 2nd grade and still know it, plus a few "words" here and there. My kids learned several songs in elementary school, which they still know. Our CC has a good sign language program, and I'm tempted. My friend's niece is profoundly deaf, signs and reads lips and speaks well. My grandson may have hearing loss; I don't know what the holdup is in diagnosing him. My older granddaughters know "I love you", which is how I always wave good-bye to the kids.
HOWEVER, I think "the bird" is pretty much the same in sign language as it is in gesture language.
