Yes and no. To experience love returned is truly spectacular. But one can love by itself: a book, a river, a painting, etc. and then there's unrequited love (ouch). You need to be more specific with your questions......

There is a small fishing village near where I live, there was a van/truck parked there with a sign in the window it said,  Woman wanted, must be able to clean, cook, drive, wash van and dig bait, now that's real love.

Yes, I think you are onto something there.  You know love when you experience what you think it is.  Your concept of love may change as you meet and love different people.  The "love" you feel for people isn't the same as that felt for pets, friends, food, music, places, etc. AND, the love you feel for people isn't all exactly the same, either.  

Sometimes we miss the fact we love until what or whom we love is gone.  :(
