    Factor:

    5x + 15y

    Answer:

    5(x + 3y)

What do you mean, "FACTOR"?   You are trying to add x and y.  There is no "=" to give me a hint as to how I would proceed.

I suppose you could factor the 5 and 15 to 1 and 3, which would make your answer

    x + 3y

To factor means to find what to multiply together to get to the original expression.

You can also factor a number by reducing it to the prime numbers used to multiply to that number. (16 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2, for example)
