Do I retain NHS pension survivor benefit if my husband and I separate?

We both have defined benfit scheme final salary pensions from the NHS. If we separate do we still have the right to a survivor pension if one of us dies?

If I understood this blog correctly the answer is; if you only separate you have to wait until he dies to claim the benefit. If you divorce however, you can claim the benefit before he dies.
