      Holmes already smoked a tobacco that burned more easily than the usual pipe tobacco. Keeping such tobacco in an open container atop his mantel must have meant that his tobacco probably burned like kindling..So it must've been a lot!

        I’m not sure he ever lit the pipe but then, I’ve only read a small amount of Doyle’s stories…….

            Are you sure that is tobacco that he puts into his pipe? The Brits had a long standing relationship with India, a drug culture. America choose to export tobacco because it was known to be addictive, whereas hemp was considered to be enlightening and not addictive until after WW2. Holmes would have considered that as well and went for the hemp...he was into drugs of all sort. The benifit of hemp to an intellectual is in lowering the barriers to reason thus permitting thought in novel ways...imaginative.

              Also; Tobacco left in the open dries and becomes increasingly harsh... loosing flavor. While hemp is usually dried, allowing the vanishing oils to reduce and altering the flavor from soft/nutty to an unsavory & choking bitter. Quality and flavor is going through an ever broadening scope and range of values. I thought Holmes may also be drawn to opium, being so available at the time. There were several other notable drugs then, as now but less notable known. The near lethal sort so easily overdosing to provide cadavers for educational purposes.
