Product key for what? Which product?

it's on the back of the CD case.When you try to download certain links, some boxes come up that say to fill in name , company, product key ---then here it says it's on the back of the CD case. It's prob some outmoded thing. I can't get emails to download when it says that. I had one just tonight and worked on it for quite awhile
There are many programs that require a key. Some of them are downloaded straight from the internet which means the key is sent in e-mail. This is why I asked, which product.
