It's the routing part of a program retrieving your personal information so it can load your personal program.
For example: an e-mail provider has millions of users all using the same e-mail program. It retrieves your user profile so it can route you to your personal e-mail. E-mail programs are not in our computers. They are on a server owned by the program developers. All e-mails are stored on that server, not in our computers. We get routed from our computer to the program that has our user profile embedded into it making it possible to log into our e-mail from any computer or other device.
