    The gears in the shifter, or in the trans are probably stripped. And the nubs on the gears are probably worn down.

      Check the linkage. Make sure it's not bound up or dislodged from it's track.

        You'll have that problem if the tranny fluid is too low...check that first. THEN go from there. 2...vacume hose may be disconnected...3...could be a more serious problem....but start by checking fluid level...GOOD LUCK!
