Facebook...I use FB because I have an iPhone and Mac/Apple equipment. It is easy to use ... it will tell you how to sign up step by step and it is free (so is twitter but, to me and my learning style, twitter did not make as much sense). After you have your username and password you enter facebook and the reason I use it is not because it is more useful than email; it streams a lot of threads that give me a lot of different information about a lot of different topics that I am very interested in. For example: Obama's birth certificate to tomorrow night's meal, a new color of blush from Lauder to Stock Market news. I get to find people I would love to catch up with. My sister can see my kids pictures even though we live far apart and we can chat on-line at night whenever we want...free.
