I wish they would fall asleep and leave me alone.

I think they are great and we need more of them, since about 40,000 people are killed on Americans roads a year. I realize back seat drivers can be irritating, but I think most of the time they just want to get home, alive. If anybody gets a lot of flack from a back seat driver, that's a good reason to take a drivers class, even if you're 85. I recently spoke with a trainer at Allied Driving School, and he said most drivers could benefit by more training. Plus many more drivers are on the road than were 20 years. In the bay area of California, its a dangerous place on the roads especially during rush hour and when it rains. Drive careful.

I think of a backseat driver as one who is telling me to speed up, slow down, change lanes, look out, and otherwise presume to be more adept behind the wheel than I.
This is ALWAYS annoying and they are mistaken in their presumptions. My sister and I have been driving to the Bay Area every couple of weeks for three months. The other day she asked me to slow down. "Sure," I replied, applying the brake gently since I already had my foot OFF the gas pedal and had been coasting for over half a mile. "Do something for me when YOU are driving, though." "What?" she asked. "Stop using your cell phone."

My OL was backseat driving at home. That is, while in the same room and she doing one of her crafts she would talk openly about anything on her mind and go on talking even if I did not respond to her. Back seat drivers talk openly about whatever is going on in their mind too. I found this behavior quite annoying and choose to talk with her as if I were part of her day dream…in the same rambling tone. By doing this I became part of her on-going prattle and choose to use my influence to calmly let her see herself talking on and on, clearly about nothing. We bantered on in the tonal interplay reminding her softly that she was still talking to herself until she realized what she was doing…filling the air with little day dream.
Then she paused, thought about what she had been saying and doing and stopped, having caught herself doing that very thing. Hearing herself going-on that way she has, ever sense, not filled the air with her day-dreams and has greatly improved her craft skills by doing so.
