Confiscate their vehicles, the penalties for being caught are far too small,it's also against the law in the UK but I see many still using their devices daily.

I was referring to the cop using his computer and not paying attention…...

I had better not get into this one,I had two off duty policemen ,crash into my car at an estemated speed of 80 m/p/h,on a 40m/p/h road, they change seats as the driver had been drinking, my car a total right off,and i was not to good, and they still got off,Talk about jobs for the boys,

I drive regularly to a very busy port near to me, there  are always large lorries trundling towards me with the drivers on their phones. I saw one a few weeks ago with his laptop on his dashboard, it's scary it will result in a major accident sooner or later.

The cops here have their computers just under the dash and use them constantly thus the smashing the motorcycle incident……...

They sound like they are the same the world over, they think they are above the law. Well, most of them anyway.

It's against the law in Canada as well but it never stops....texting, cell phones. I've almost been hit a couple of times because of it. Steeper fines...maybe $1000.00 and 7 days in jail...the FIRST time! How about doubling that each subsequent time. I can't believe we are so helpless when it comes to enforcing laws. We just sit back and sigh.   Grrrrrr.....

Shouldn’t the cops be required to pull over to use their computers?

You would think so but any cops that I've known over the years, were also the worst speeders in town! They are often above the law.

My son recently was pulled over for having his cell phone in his hand.  He got a citation for that and not having a driver's license (someone had to come to drive his car, otherwise it was headed for the tow yard).  His bail amount if $670.  If THAT doesn't stop him, you tell me what will.
Right now, in California, using a cell phone is just an infraction, not a misdemeanor.  If the classification were changed, the bail amount would increase.  Confiscate the vehicle and the phone.  The more inconvenient and expensive, the quicker the lesson learned.  It's a hassle for law enforcement, but it will work.
As for the cop who caused an accident, write him up with the misdemeanor and send him to court because HE, of all people, should NEVER be using a cell phone when he is driving.

It's an offence in South Australia, an on the spot fine of $360 applies, Law enforcement still have to obey the law, in this case a supension of license and a hefty fine to set an example to others.:(
