Who here, has been home-schooled? How did it turn out? What do you think about it?

I have not been home schooled but a friend of mine, home schooled her 3 children. I thought at the time, that it was not a good idea. I wondered if they might be missing out on some aspects of life. Her children, now in their 20's, are sociable, moral, highly intelligent, likeable, great, great kids. I was wrong.

This is obviously a success, but some homeschooling parents are fanatics who don't want their kids taught about evolution, and are anti-vaccination and possibly members of religious sects.

There are fanatics on EVERY subject. That's why people can argue about EVERYTHING, right?

No fanatics on this site fortunately.

    Fortunately.

I could never be home schooled, little attention span and lack of disapline...But, I have a cousin who was homeschooled and he turned out great! Just graduated from college.........

It can be great if the family is going by some approved standards, and they are regimented enough to insure all content is covered.  One thing to watch is for the socialization of the child, formal schools afford this as the nature of their structure.

The home schooler that I knew, had numerous social events for their home-schooled kids, more than public schools. The time spent on actual school work, is also far less than what it takes in public schools. No wasted time on discipline issues, a whole class reading from a book, lessons repeated again and again, changing class rooms, etc. The work is far more concentrated and most of the kids had straight A's according to exams taken and structured by the Board of Education.

And I knew of a group who wanted to begin their own FFA (Future Farmers of America) chapter. The public school gave them a hard time, my friend and I represented them at a school committee meeting to support their efforts.

The public school here, gave the "Home Schoolers" a hard time as well. It was an ongoing debate...until the test results arrived and the social skills of the students became apparent. Then it grew very quiet and the debate ended. That was several years ago.
