I woke up with a numb upper lip. Any ideas what could cause it. There's an online doctor but I'd rather ask here than pay him/her a lotl

Right off the bat I’d say it was something you ate. Take an antihistamine and see if that doesn’t fix that……...

antihistamine ... hmmm. Never had one of those. I'll look in my husband's medicine cabinet. It could be that according to what I just read.

Quite often, numbness is caused by a lack of circulation.  My fingers get numb if I sleep in the wrong positions, my foot "falls asleep", etc. etc. etc.
The only time MY lips ever got numb was when I was pregnant and diabetic.  I had given myself my pre-meal insulin shot and needed to wait 45 minutes before eating.  About 20 minutes into the wait (plenty of time to prepare the meal), my lips went numb.  My blood sugar had dropped to 45.  Some orange juice and a graham cracker took care of the problem.
    Just a thought.

I'd been doing what little research I can on this ancient unreliable computer. I don't know how to use the new one. I found out a lot of scary stuff.

There IS a lot of scary stuff out there, which makes it even more practical to consult an actual professional! :D

Have a look here for causes and treatment. >>> http://www.yogawiz.com/blog/home-remedies/lips-numbness-causes-and-home-remedies.html

I read it and now my hair stands on end. My friend said, "For Heaven's sake don't go looking on the internet for problems like that. You probably just got a bug bite as you slept. Don't worry."
Sure sure. I won't worry. I'll just wash all the linens and covers and breathe deeply. That's what we do when we suspect a bug in bed with us. Yikes! Eeeeeeeek.

Didn't this happen to you before and you discovered you fell asleep ON your computer??

    itsmee

Did it?! I've got to check my questions. Thank you, clu. The problem is actually worse than I reported. My pinky toe is numb and so is my little finger. I have a mystery brewing in my body. I almost wish it was a spider bite. Almost. : (

Well now that you've reported that you are completely falling apart, you may have to actually see a doctor. Spider bite was just to freak you, lol
    itsmee

AND IT DID! My hair stood on end. For reals.
Yep, I will see the doctor if it doesn't get better real soon.

spider bite to freak me out .... Oh I might as well.... kik.

Are you sure that you were not in a bar room brawl last night, Its?  Just kidding, but it would make a great tale, huh?  Hope all is well...

Could be your blood pressure. Do you have anyway to check it right now? a BP cuff or machine? When mine goes sky high...my lips get tingly.

    itsmee

I've never had high blood pressure in my life. You know, the problem is still going on so I will see a doctor as soon as possible. Maybe tomorrow.

Good plan...Tell them exactly whats going on, don't just make a future appointment to see your doctor...the sooner you get in,the better. I never knew I had HBP till recently. For some people can have their BP go up for some reason or another. Please have it checked out.Good luck and Merry Christmas!
    itsmee

    I will.
Merry Christmas to you, dear wonderer.

    Thank you...O Ya...HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

diabetes can sometimes cause numbness in various parts of your body . Sometimes nerves can cause you mouth and jaw to feel numb. It did me for years.off and on .....untill I was over 40.!  Sometimes ( I don't want to scare you,) but a little stroke can cause numbness somewhere around the mouth. But, if it was that, you'd prob have it only on one side.It could be the beginning of Bell's Palsy, but there again, you'd prob have it only on one side. If you're a diabetic, my guess is that it's neuropathy. Does it tingle too ?

If it doesn't clear up in 12 hours, see a Dr.

My mom had Diabetes and had a totally life-altering stroke. My mom's sister and my mom's mother also had Diabetes. Thank you. I will go to the doctor asap. I always ask her for a BLOOD test for Diabetes, but she always gives me the finger stick. Nothing has been particularly high there.
    THANK YOU.

I often wake up with numb fingers, that's usually when I have slept with my hands or arms too high . Have you been talking too much in your sleep itsmee ? Seriously though you ought to see a doctor for a check, just to be sure.

First mistake, asking strangers to help with what could be a serious sign of medical problems. You should see a doctor.  We are not doctors we can only speculate on our own personal experiences, your situation may be different.

That said, I 'speculate' that you have accidentally injured a nerve in your lip, this would cause numbness, but usually when a person injures a nerve the numbness is preceded by a tingling sensation.  As the nerve recovers, the numbness returns to tingling again then back to normal.  <<Speculation>>> If it continues for a couple days I would get to a 'real' doctor.

    itsmee

You are right about asking medical questions.
I know you all well and wouldn't believe a thing anyone said anyway. : )
(Except for Colleen's response when she said, "Don't worry. It's just a spider bite) I DID believe that one for about 15 hair-raising seconds.
I have a scratch on my face. Your speculation could be right. Thank you.
    Vinny

HA!! I didn't even know it was you (a regular) asking or else I probably wouldn't have replied. I rarely look at the poster's name in questions. LOL!

salu, moi je pense que tu toi chauffer un peu d'aeu pour masser tes levres

    itsmee

Thank you for your response. I don't know how to change your words to English. Do you know how to do that?
