I want to paint the pedistle of a mahogany dining table.Good or bad idea?

The table is very old,in good condition.I don't want to ruin it but would like to modernize it.The pedestal is 27" in circumference with 4 claw feet.

It's your table. If you have no intentions of ever selling it, paint away. You may have to do some light sanding to make the paint stick. Mahogany is a popular wood so painting it would decrease your chances of selling it for a decent price should you ever decide to sell it. Since you say it's old, I would check to make sure it's not made by some famous furniture maker.
