Could be a potentional hazard to drive in the condition you mentioned. If possible, take it out of 4wd and take to your nearest safety inspection service...there should be one or more in your area that will look it over and explain to you exactly what the problem is and give you a free estimate on the repair work. They may not tell you what you WANT to here, but you'll get an educated opinion. Good luck...and drive carefully on the way there.
