Facebook requires that you do use your real name. If they suspect that you are not using your real name they can delete your account. Remember, you choose who can see your personal information and your posts. You also choose who becomes part of your friends list. So using your real name is as safe as you yourself make it by using the privacy options FB supplies.

There are many Facebook pages that are business oriented, which may be a way to sneak yourself onto the website. If you don't want your real name out there, how do you expect to get friended? Are you just planning to go snooping around anonymously? Would you want someone doing that to you?
