There are many fault lines in the earth’s crust. A fault is where blocks of crust on either side are moving relative to one another. The typical average rate is around a millimeter per year. This is to say that every part of the crust roughly moves a millimeter in a year. If the rate of movement is slow, there is not much a problem. Or, if the rocks move very gradually, they are not a cause of concern.
