    why do outhouses have moons carved into them

    I realized as a small child (when you would have to use the outhouse) that they had moons carved into some part of the structure.  Why were moons carved into outhouses?

      The reason for the crescent moon on the outhouse door is like having a sign on the women's restroom door signifying that it is a woman's outhouse. They used to put a star in it's place for the men's door and if there was a crescent moon and a star both on the door then it was a unisex outhouse.
