LOL! This question has amused people for years!
There's a plunger button (switch) somewhere around the molding of the fridge. Locate it and push it with your finger. When you do this, the light should go off.
When you close the door, the door itself pushes on this plunger button breaking the circuit. That's how you know

Another way is to empty the fridge, get inside and see. Best to have someone outside the fridge to open the door if it gets stuck.
