It depends on what you're measuring. The term "linear feet" is often used for carpet, which usually comes in rolls that are 12 feet wide. Just one foot of that size roll will cover 12 square feet. So if you want to buy enough carpet to cover 5000 square feet, just divide 5000 by 12. In that case you would need about 417 linear feet, plus some extra to make it easier to fit the pieces together.
