    Hardboard is made in standard sheet sizes of 2440mm x 1220 mm, at a thickness range from 3mm to 9mm, though smaller sheets are now available in DIY stores. http://www.thediyworld.co.uk/hardboard.html

    the standard for all sheet goods of lumber, plywood, wood paneling, sheetrock, etc. is indeed 4 ft. by 8 ft. they vary in thickness however.
