    mon·e·tar·y (mn-tr, mn-)
    adj.
    1. Of or relating to money.
    2. Of or relating to a nation's currency or coinage.

The word monetary means having to do with money. For example, if you are working for monetary gain, this means you are going to be paid for your work. In contrast, if you are working on a voluntary basis, this means you are doing it out of the kindness of your little heart and for this, there no guarantee you will be paid.
