    Brass Monkey's, where did this saying originate ?

    I think I know the full phrase and thanks for not posting it as it is a "fine line" phrase for the language allowed on this forum. 


    The phrase originated from the use of a brass tray referred to as a "monkey" to carry cannonballs on 16th to 18th century war ships to the cannons, when the temperature got too cold the tray would contract causing the cannon balls to fall off. 


    Hence the term, cold enough to freeze the [cannon]balls off a brass monkey.
