I am told MAC computers do not get viruses - why is that?

They can get a virus but they are less prone to virus's.

Macs are significantly less vulnerable to viruses than windows. some people will tell you this is because Macs have a smaller market share so less people target them, but this is wrong. Macs are less prone to viruses because they run on the Unix kernel. In Windows a file can auto execute (run without any input from you) however in a mac a file cannot auto execute you need to manually type in a password to run an executable file.
