Heat rises and cooler air remains closer to floor level.
In the SUMMER, you want to run your ceiling fans in a 'counterclockwise direction to PULL the cool air up and distribute it throughout the room....and cooling the hot air near the ceiling.
On the other hand...during the heating season, you will want to 'reverse the air flow' and have the fans PUSHING the warm air near the ceiling 'down' into the room, with the fan disbursing it throughout the rooms.
Remember, too, it's a good time to give the fan blades a good cleaning...otherwise, when you reverse their direction, a lot of dust and fuzzies can go flying all over the room.
