I went to public school in New York City. It was the policy back then to assign (grade) and..

class numbers based upon perceived intelligence or lack thereof. For instance, 1-1 was the "tops" for first grade, 2-1 for second, etc. It was no secret. Due to my being sick in kindergarten and out most of the year, there was really no way for my teacher to evaluate me, so I was put into 1-5. The following year for 2nd grade, I was in 2-3 and mid-term, the teacher saw my potential and 6 others, and moved us up to 2-2. This was a very demoralizing way of labeling students, not only for them, but for their parents as well. Finally, "someone must have seen the light", and a few years later, re-numbered the classes according to their room numbers. DUHHH! Did you experience any stupidity as blatant as this while attending school?

We had "x", "y", and "z" added to English class. X was the higher abilities.

My kids were in the "Honors" classes from 2nd through 6th grade. Kids tested in higher percentiles on national exams along with teacher recommendation.  There were some parents who made it difficult and the kids were set aside a little from

the two regular classes. We lived 4 miles from town, their first school was half mile away. They had to ride the bus to school in town, One son wasin a class with 22 girls and 8 boys. He'd have been better off in a regular class. Their junior high had advanced block, and the 8th grade teacher was horrid.
