A simple matter of diffusion. The Lightning strikes the sea,and most probably would kill any life form in the immediate area. However think of the size of the sea and the lightning strike. The further from point of immediate point of impact the lightning travels, the power it carried is weakened (or diluted). That is diffusion of energy.
