Pecan trees are one of the few plants that need zinc sprays to grow and develop correctly. There are several types of zinc materials for spraying. Two of the most common are zinc nitrate and zinc sulfate. Zinc nitrate is a liquid. Use two to four teaspoons per gallon of water. If you know you will be spraying many pecan trees, use one to two quarts of zinc nitrate for 100 gallons of water. Zinc sulfate is a powder. Use two teaspoons of zinc sulfate for each gallon of water or two pounds for 100 gallons of water. You can also add UAN liquid fertilizer (32-0-0) to the zinc sulfate to help it penetrate the leaves. Add one quart of fertilizer for every 100 gallons of the water and zinc sulfate solution. When you are spraying your pecan trees with zinc solutions, it is important to keep the spray from drifting on other trees as it can cause leaf burn. Leaf burn can also occur on your pecan trees if you use more than the recommended amount of zinc materials in the water when you spray.
