A simple pendulum is one which can be considered to be a point mass suspended from a string or rod of negligible mass. It is a resonant system with a single resonant frequency.
In the treatment of the ordinary pendulum, Newton's Second Law is used directly to get the equation of motion. This was possible only because we can neglect the mass of the string and because we could treat the mass like a point mass at its end. Example, the pendulum in a grandfather clock. http://phy.duke.edu/~rgb/Class/phy51/phy51/node23.html
