First, cut the cake once across the top.
Second, cut it again across the top. It should look like an X from above and be in 4 large slices.
Third, cut the cake long-ways in half, so that each of those 4 pieces are half of their original height.

I've just spent the last couple of hours trying to figure a way to zig-zag 8 slices on 3 strokes.
