    Yes you can as long as the top of it is made of screen or plastic with holes in it so the gerbil can breath.

    No plastic. The little buggers will just chew through it ;)

    Well, they will chew through it if they have a climbing toy or perch that is hight enough so that is a good point.

    Them little buggers can jump! I know. I had them when I was a kid and I would find them hanging from the wire cover trying to get out. They had nothing to stand on to jump either.

    LOL...I always had wood and wire cages...and took them out to play all of the time (despite the cats we had)

    Make sure you get a top for it. They make wire ones that fit the tank.
