hi steelersfan,,i cannot believe an aussie has not answered your question, in the old days a man would travel a long distance for work, and he would roll up a spare shirt and beding in a roll and tie it on his back .similer to a roll tied to the back of a saddle on a horse. in the poem waltzing matilda,, a swagmans swag was called a matilda,,,,best answer i can give you mate,,,,
