In law, afterthought can apply to types of murders that occur.
Voluntary manslaughter -- This happens when the defendant has killed with a malice afterthought, which means that killing may have been unintentional but there was an intention to at least cause serious injury to the victim. Mitigating factors such as provocation can reduce culpability.
Involuntary Manslaughter -- This is the killing of a person without both malice and malice afterthought. The difference between involuntary and voluntary manslaughter is that there is no intention to kill in the former.
